Invasive opossums can be a real nuisance, especially if they get into your trash or make a home in your attic. Fortunately, there are a few simple ways to get rid of opossums that have infested your Polk County property.
Opossums are agile critters that can nest in all sorts of hiding places such as inside wood piles, underneath porches, and within attics and storage areas. Remove attractive nesting spaces by keeping your yard free of debris, lawn and shrubs trimmed, and any outside storage areas tidy. Also, seal up any exterior cracks or vulnerable areas around your home or roof that opossums can use to get inside. Extra layers of wire mesh and caulk will deter opossums from chewing through any holes or openings.
Opossums are scavengers and will eat anything they can find, including unsealed trash and fallen produce from trees and bushes. Double-bag your trash to eliminate the smell, and lock the bins if you store them outside. Bird feeders and leaky hoses are easy sources of water for these critters, as well, so empty out bird feeders and baths when they aren’t in use and tighten any water spickets around your home. Also, regularly bring in your pet’s food bowls at night.
If the opossums are persistent, there are ways to scare them away. The critters use their heightened sense of smell to make sure they’re not in danger. Use this to your advantage by placing ammonia-soaked rags or mothballs around places where you notice opossum activity. The ammonia mimics the smell of predator urine and will let the opossums know they’re not welcome. Motion-activated lights or sprinklers can also give them a good scare, activating their flight response.
While all of these solutions may work temporarily, it can be tricky to get rid of opossums without professional help. A licensed and trained opossum removal expert will have the equipment and expertise to remove the critters safely and humanely.
