Ways to Keep Squirrels Off Your Roof

While squirrels may not seem like a nuisance, they can cause lots of damage to your roof if they decide to make a home up there. Broken shingles and chewed wires are just some of the damages these little critters can cause. Below are some ways to keep squirrels off your roof.

Helpful Tips to Keep Squirrels Off Roofs

  1. Cut Back Your Trees

Squirrels are excellent climbers and jumpers. They can scurry up and along trees near your home and use overhanging branches to get onto your roof. Make sure any trees are trimmed back at least 10 feet away from your home so they can’t jump on your roof and get inside your attic.

  1. Cover Wires and Electric Cables

To prevent squirrels from climbing up wires, take at least two PVC pipes, slice them lengthwise, and slip them over cables or wires you may have running on or to your roof. The slippery plastic throws the squirrel off-balance and deters them from accessing your roof or chewing your wires.

  1. Install Baffles

You can also “squirrel-proof” your roof by installing squirrel guards. Baffles are installed along your gutter and prevent squirrels from walking up. Additionally, squirrel guards made out of sheet metal attached to poles or trees will be too slippery for the critter to scale.

  1. Scare Them Off

Squirrels are natural prey for owls, hawks, and other large birds. Placing bird decoys on your roof might be a good deterrent that causes scared squirrels to run away from your roof.
